This report presents key information for 1995 to 2003 on obesity among children aged under 11 living in England. Results and analysis are based on data from the Health Survey for England reports published in December 2003. This report uses the data for 2001 and 2002 combined when analysing the relationships between social demographic factors and obesity in greater depth. These analyses are intended to support the development of an evidence-based approach to prevention, management and treatment of obesity in children.

On 21 April 2006 the following corrections were made to the tables accompanying the report:

  • Tables 1 to 4: changed percentage prevalence figures for 1998, for males and females, for obese and overweight including obese, because in the original tables the base sample size included children with no valid body mass index (BMI) measure.
  • Table 2: the percentage figure for overweight including obese males in 2002 has been corrected from 28.1 to 28.5

The relevant charts in the main report have been revised in line with these changes
