The research project reported here was commissioned by the Department of Health. Its aim was to provide information that would assist in the design of surveys and interpretation of survey results bearing on the general health of the population of England, resident in private households.

The social capital and social exclusion module for the Health Survey (2000) was developed to capture key elements of social capital, new to the survey, and aspects of social exclusion not covered by the existing suite of questions on socio-economic status asked every year in the Health Survey.
