Lifestyle and behaviour, especially habitual behaviour, can directly affect the health of an individual; this section includes overall lifestyle surveys (such as the Living in Britain series) and specific topics such as working patterns, alcohol, diet, drugs, smoking and sun exposure.
Surveys about a variety of health issues such as back pain, coronary heart disease, contraception and sexual health.
Surveys about the mental health of certain groups; children, adolescents, carers, adults, older people, and on attitudes to mental health amongst the general population.

The Department of Health commissioned BMRB Limited to conduct a major survey of people with learning difficulties in England. The survey was conducted in a partnership/consortium arrangement including Central England People First and the Institute for Health Research at Lancaster University.

Cleanliness and staff attitudes are the most important factors for patients to feel they are treated with privacy and dignity in hospital, research published today by the Department of Health shows.The research, conducted by Ipsos MORI, involved 2,000 interviews with members of the public across the country. It was designed to explore perceptions towards privacy and dignity in hospitals, with particular emphasis on the importance of single-sex accommodation.
This relatively small survey provides a useful check on public sentiment and patient experience to complement the much larger patient surveys undertaken by the former Commission for Health Improvement and its successor, the Commission for Healthcare Audit and Inspection.
