This statistical bulletin presents results from a survey of Trading Standards Departments in local authorities in England of activity during the year September 2000 to August 2001.
Summary
In England, during the year September 2000 to August 2001:
- Of the 150 local authorities with trading standards responsibilities 104 (69%) used volunteer children (aged under 16) to carry out test purchases of tobacco products in around 3,800 premises.
- Cigarettes were sold to volunteer children in 445 premises (12% of those where purchases were attempted) in 78 local authorities (52% of all local authorities).
- Around 21,800 premises were visited in 106 authorities (71% of all authorities) to check whether a warning notice (stating that it is illegal to sell tobacco products to under 16s) was being displayed at the point of sale.
- Around 2,900 premises (13% of premises visited) in 91 authorities (61% of all local authorities) were not displaying a warning sign.
- Sixty authorities (40% of all local authorities) carried out monitoring of cigarette vending machines
