This statistical bulletin presents results from monitoring smoking cessation services in England during the year April 2000 to March 2001.
Summary
The key results show that in England, during the period April 2000 to March 2001:
- Around 132,500 people set a quit date through the smoking cessation services.
- Nearly three fifths (58%) of those setting a quit date were women and just over two fifths (42%) were men.
- At the 4 week follow-up, around 64,600 (49%) of those setting a quit date had successfully quit (based on self-report).
- Around 48,200 (36%) of those setting a quit date received free Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) or vouchers for free NRT.
- The expenditure on smoking cessation services, which does not include the cost of NRT or bupropion (Zyban) on prescription, was £21.5 million.
