Provisional statistics from the National Drug Treatment Monitoring System in England, 2001/02 and 2002/03

This release presents provisional key results from the National Drug Treatment Monitoring System on problem drug misusers in treatment at drug treatment agencies and general practitioners in England during 2001/02 and 2002/03.

  • It is estimated that in 2002/03 there were around 140,900 problem drug misusers in treatment at drug treatment agencies and general practitioners in England, compared to around 128,200 in 2001/02 (an increase of 10%).
  • A "census" of problem drug misusers in treatment estimated that there were around 118,500 people in treatment in 2000/01. The estimated increase between 2000/01 and 2001/02 was 8%.
  • It is estimated that in 2002/03 around 80,600 problem drug misusers successfully completed treatment (including being referred on to other drug treatment agencies) or were retained in treatment at the end of year compared to around 75,500 in 2001/02 (an increase of 7%). However as a percentage of the total number in treatment during the year, the numbers successfully completing or retained in treatment fell from 59% in 2001/02 to 57% in 2002/03.
