Survey of Health and Local Authority Registration and Inspection units 1998-99

  • Last modified date:
    8 February 2007

The report attached gives the results of a survey by Department of Health of Registration and Inspection activity in 1998-99. The survey covers Local Authority and Health Authority Inspection units. This is the first time that there has been a systematic central collection of data in respect of registration and inspection. Work is in hand on preparing subnational data from the survey and this will be placed on the DH Internet Site as soon as possible.

Earlier surveys

The 1998-1999 survey is the first to cover Health Authority Registration and Inspection Units, which have not previously provided information centrally. Local Authority R&I units have been surveyed twice before, by Social Services Inspectorate in 1994-1995 and 1996-1997. References to these earlier surveys are given in the report.

Future surveys

It is intended that the survey of Registration and Inspection will become annual from now on, until superseded by the annual report of the National Commission for Care Standards. The forms for the 1999-2000 survey will be circulated in April this year for completion by the end of May. We will be writing to Heads of Units about this in the next month or so.
