  • Last modified date:
    8 February 2007

This statistical bulletin provides information on the residential, nursing and private hospitals and clinics provision (predominantly for adults), and on residential and nursing care placements funded by Local Authorities, at 31 March 2001.

Findings

At 31 March, 2001

Homes and Places

  • There were 341,200 residential places in 24,100 residential care homes (including small homes) and 186,800 registered beds in 5,700 nursing homes and private hospitals and clinics. Of the total number of places and beds, 37,900 residential and an estimated 71,500 nursing places were in 2,300 dual registered homes.
  • Between 2000 and 2001, there have been decreases in the number of residential care homes and places of around 700 (3%) and 4,700 (1%) respectively. In the South East there was a fall of around 200 homes and 1,000 places.
  • The number of Local Authority staffed homes has continued to fall. In 2001, the independent sector provided 92% of all homes and 85% of places in residential care homes.
  • The total number of nursing homes and private hospitals and clinics went down by around 200 or 3% between 2000 and 2001. There has been a 6,500 fall (3%) in the number of registered beds in nursing homes and private hospitals and clinics, which suggests that the number of beds is around 5% lower than in 1997.

Residents supported by Local Authorities

  • The number of supported residents in local authority residential, independent residential, nursing, other and unstaffed homes has decreased for the first time since 1994 to 261,800, down 3,400 on the previous year.
  • Over half (54%) of supported residents were in independent residential care homes, 27% in independent nursing homes, 16% in Local Authority staffed homes.
  • Around four fifths of all supported residents were aged 65 or more.
