Community Care Statistics 1999: Private Nursing Homes, Hospitals and Clinics, England

This statistical bulletin contains information for the financial years 1997/98 and 1998/99 on Independent Sector Nursing Homes, Private Hospitals and Clinics registered under Section 23 of the Registered Homes Act 1984

Findings

Homes

  • At 31 March 1999, the overall number of registered establishments has levelled out at just over 6,100.
  • Compared with 1998, the number of mental health nursing homes has increased by 3%, hospitals and clinics have risen by 4%, while the number of general nursing homes has dropped by over 2%.
  • Over the last five years, the number of general nursing homes has remained fairly stable, while mental nursing homes have increased by 43% and hospitals and clinics by 20%.

Registered Beds

  • Overall, the number of registered beds has dropped by 2% between 1998 and 1999. The number of beds in general nursing homes fell by 3%, whilst the number in mental nursing homes and private hospitals and clinics rose by 6% and 3% respectively.
  • Occupancy of registered beds has increased from 78% in 1996/7 to 81% in 1998/9.
  • Over the last five years, the total number of beds in premises has increased by 9%. Beds in mental nursing homes show a 30% increase from 23,500 to 30,500.

Staffing

  • Whole time equivalent (WTE) numbers of qualified nursing staff have increased by 7% since 1996/97 to 54,800. Numbers of other nursing staff (WTE) have increased by 8% in the same period.
  • Over the last five years, there has been a 9% increase in qualified WTE nursing staff.
  • 67% of qualified WTE nursing staff were Registered General Nurses.

Care should be taken when interpreting trends in the number of occupied beds, facilities or nursing staff and in particular comparisons with 1999/2000. For 1999/2000 a different estimation method has been adopted to that used in the past. Estimates for 1998/99 will be re-worked and made available at a later date.
