Community Care Statistics 2000: Private Nursing Homes, Hospitals and Clinics, England

This statistical bulletin contains information for the financial years 1999-2000 on Independent Sector Nursing Homes, Private Hospitals and Clinics registered under Section 23 of the Registered Homes Act 1984.

Findings

Homes

  • At 31 March 2000, there were 5,880 private nursing homes, hospitals and clinics, a fall of almost 4% compared with 1999. The number of homes is at a similar level to 1995/96.
  • Compared with 1999, the number of general nursing homes has fallen by 7%, whilst the number of mental nursing homes and private hospitals and clinics have both risen (by 8% and 7% respectively).
  • Over the last five years, the proportion of general nursing homes has decreased from 80% to 74%. There has been a corresponding increase in the proportion of mental nursing homes (from 14% to 18%).

Registered Beds

  • At 31 March 2000, there were 193,300 registered beds, a fall of 4% from 1999. The number of beds is just over 1% higher than in 1995/96. Between 1999 and 2000, the number of beds in both general nursing homes and private hospitals and clinics fell by 6%, whilst the number in mental nursing homes rose by 4%.
  • In 1999/2000 there were an estimated 153,800 occupied beds giving an overall occupancy rate of 80%. There was some variation by type of accommodation.
  • Of the total number of occupied beds, 83% were occupied by people aged 65 and over . Two fifths of all beds were occupied by those aged 85 or more.

Staffing

  • In 1999/2000 there were an estimated 186,900 staff working in private nursing homes, hospitals and clinics (this equates to 140,800 whole time equivalent staff (WTE)).
  • 69% of the 51,200 qualified WTE nursing staff were Registered General Nurses.
