Community Care Statistics 2001: Private Nursing Homes, Hospitals and Clinics, England

This statistical bulletin contains information for the financial years 2000-2001 on Independent Sector Nursing Homes, Private Hospitals and Clinics in Health Authorities at 31 March 2001 under Section 23 of the Registered Homes Act 1984.

Findings

Homes

  • At 31 March 2001, there were around 5,700 private nursing homes, hospitals and clinics, a fall of 3% compared with 2000 - continuing the downward trend seen since 1998.
  • Compared with 2000, the number of general nursing and mental nursing homes has fallen by 4% and 3% respectively. Only in private hospitals and clinics was there an increase of around 20.
  • Over the last five years, the proportion of general nursing homes has decreased from 79% to 73%. There has been a corresponding increase in the proportion of mental nursing homes from 15% to 18%.

Registered/Occupied Beds

  • At 31 March 2001, there were 186,800 registered beds, a fall of 3% from 2000, and around 5% lower than in 1996/97. Between 2000 and 2001, the number of beds in general nursing homes fell by 4%.
  • In 2000/01 there were an estimated 152,100 occupied beds giving an overall occupancy rate of 81% (as compared with 80% in 2000). There was some variation by type of accommodation.
  • Of the total number of occupied beds, 82% were occupied by people aged 65 and over
  • People aged 85 or more occupied almost two-fifths of all occupied nursing beds.

Staffing

  • In 2000/01 there were an estimated 178,100 nursing staff working in private nursing homes, hospitals and clinics (this equates to 134,800 whole time equivalent staff (WTE)). The number of staff has been falling over recent years.
  • 69% of the 49,700 qualified WTE nursing staff were Registered General Nurses.
