Community Care Statistics 2002: Supported Residents (adults), England

This statistical bulletin provides information on residential and nursing care placements funded by Local Authorities, at 31 March 2002. Information on residential care homes and places is now included in the bulletin "Community Care Statistics 2002: Residential and Nursing Care Homes, Private Hospitals and Clinics".

Residents supported by Local Authorities

  • The number of supported residents in local authority residential, independent residential, nursing, other and unstaffed homes has increased to 265,100, up 3,300 on the previous year, reversing the drop recorded in that year.
  • Over half (56%) of supported residents were in independent residential care homes, 27% in independent nursing homes, 14% in Local Authority staffed homes.
  • 78% of all supported residents were aged 65 or more.
