Community Care Statistics 2003: Supported Residents (adults), England

This statistical bulletin provides information on residential and nursing care placements funded by Councils with Social Services Responsibilities (CSSRs), at 31 March 2003.

Residents supported by Councils with Social Services Responsibilities

  • The number of supported residents in CSSR residential, independent residential, nursing, other and unstaffed homes has increased to 284,100, up 19,300 (7%) on the previous year. However, when former preserved rights residents are excluded there was a fall of around 5%.
  • Over half (59%) of supported residents were in independent residential care homes, 28% in independent nursing homes, 12% in CSSR staffed homes.
  • 78% of all supported residents were aged 65 or more.
  • In 2002-03 there were 119,400 permanent admissions and 281,500 temporary admissions.
  • 31,900 or 27% of permanent admissions during 2002-03 related to residents formerly in receipt of preserved rights.
