Community Care Statistics 1998: Residential Personal Social Services for Adults, England

This bulletin contains statistics on the total number of residential and nursing care homes, the number of places in these homes, and the number of residents supported by Local Authorities. Data is for England at 31 March 1998 and are based on returns submitted to the Department of Health by Local Authorities (in respect of residential care homes) and Health Authorities (nursing homes registered under Part 2 of the Registered Homes Act 1984).

Key points

 At 31 March 1998:

 Places

  • there were 347,400 residential places in 24,800 residential care homes (including small homes), and 193,900 nursing places in 5,800 nursing care homes. Of these 31,100 residential and 63,800 nursing places were in 2,100 dual registered homes;
  • the total number of places available has in creased by 18% since 1994 to 541,300;
  • the independent sector provided 88% of all residential and nursing care home places compared to 82% in 1994;
  • the proportion of total places in the independent sector which were in dual registered homes had increased from 8% in 1994 to 18% in 1998;

Residents supported by local authorities

  • the number of supported residents in local authority residential, independent residential, and nursing homes continued to rise in 1998 to 244,600 (compared to 149,000 in 1994);
  • around 78% of residents supported in residential care were in independent sector homes (compared with 41% in 1994 and 20% in 1993).
