Homes and Places

  • There were 345,000 residential places in 24,800 residential care homes (including small homes) and 196,000 registered beds in 6,100 nursing care homes and private hospitals and clinics. Of the total number of places and beds, 32,700 residential and 57,100 nursing places were in 2,200 dual registered homes.
  • The number of residential care homes and total number of nursing homes, private hospitals and clinics are at similar levels to 1998. The number of places in residential care homes increased up until 1998, with a levelling off between 1998 and 1999. Between 1998 and 1999, there has been a fall of around 5% in the number of registered beds in nursing homes and private hospitals and clinics (although the number of places is still 6% higher than in 1995).
  • The independent sector provided just over 90% of all homes and 83% of places in residential care homes.
  • The proportion of independent sector residential care homes that were dual registered has increased from 5% in 1995 to 10 % in 1999.

Residents supported by Local Authorities

  • The number of supported residents in local authority residential, independent residential, nursing, other and unstaffed homes continued to rise in 1999 to 261,000 (compared to 186,000 in 1995).
  • Around 80% of residents supported in residential care were in independent sector homes (compared with 61% in 1995 and 20% in 1993).
  • Around four fifths of all supported residents were aged 65 or more.
