The bulletin presents statistics of children and young people under 18 years of age accommodated in secure units maintained by local authority social services departments in England and Wales. Because there is only one secure unit in Wales it is customary to include it in this publication. Secure accommodation is provided for young people who are thought to be at risk of causing injury to themselves or others, or who have been detained or remanded into local authority accommodation.

The statistics cover type of homes, size of homes, age accommodated in the homes. age criteria for admission, facilities in the homes, analysis by local authority of the location of homes, and small unregistered homes used by local authorities.
