Personal Social Services: Survey of home care users in England aged 65 or over: 2002-03

This bulletin presents for the first time statistics on the experiences of home care users aged 65 or over of Personal Social Services in England.
Main Findings
In answer to the question: Did your care workers come at times that suited you?
- 89% of respondents in England said their care workers 'always' or 'usually' came at times that suited them
- 89% of white respondents said 'always' or 'usually' compared to 79% of black and minority ethnic respondents.
In answer to the question: If you asked for changes in the help you were given, were those changes made?
- 65% of respondents in England said changes were 'always' made when asked for
- 66% of white respondents said changes were 'always' made compared to 51% of black and minority ethnic respondents.
In answer to the question: Did anyone contact you from Social Services to check that you are satisfied with the home care you receive?
- 55% of respondents in England said 'yes', someone from Social Services had contacted them to check that they were satisfied with the home care they receive.
- 55% of white respondents said 'yes' compared to 53% of black and minority ethnic respondents.
In answer to the question: Overall, how satisfied were you with the help from Social Services that you received in your own home?
- 57% of respondents in England said they were 'extremely' or 'very' satisfied with the help they receive from Social Services.
- 58% of white respondents said they were 'extremely' or 'very' satisfied compared to 44% of black and minority ethnic respondents.
