Personal social services staff of social services departments at 30 September 1998, England

The data in this Bulletin is derived from a return (SSDS001) completed each September by Local Authority Social Services departments. The form covers all staff, whether full or part time, directly employed by Social services departments (whole time equivalents are calculated on the basis of staff contractual weeks). The return does not cover staff who work in the independent or voluntary sector.

Main findings:

  •  In September 1998, Local Authority Social Services departments in England employed staff with a whole time equivalent of 223,500
  • This represents a drop of about 3% in numbers employed by Local Authorities since September 1997 and 6% since September 1994
  • Nearly half of all staff work in an area office or field work setting
  • Just over a quarter of staff work in residential care
  • 44% of all staff are employed on a part-time basis
