The data in this Bulletin is derived from a return (SSDS001) completed each September by Local Authority Social Services departments. The form covers all staff, whether full or part time, directly employed by Social Services departments (whole time equivalents are calculated on the basis of staff contractual weeks). The return does not cover staff who work in the independent or voluntary sector. Completed returns were received from all authorities and this year, for the first time, information has been collected by gender.
The SSDS001 return was introduced in 1993 as a cooperative exercise between DH and the then Local Government Management Board (LGMB). The results of the survey will link with the Employers Organisation (EO) Workforce analysis, due to be published later this year.
