The data in this Bulletin is derived from a return (SSDS001) completed each September by Councils with Social Services Responsibilities. The return covers all staff, whether full or part time, directly employed by Social Services departments (whole time equivalents are calculated on the basis of staff contractual weeks). The return does not cover staff who work in the independent or voluntary sector.
Returns were received from all councils, although two councils (North Somerset and Trafford) were unable to supply a breakdown by ethnic origin. All the staff of these two authorities have been shown as of unknown ethnic origin. In view of the high percentage of staff with ethnic origin unknown, great caution must be exercised in interpreting the ethnic origin breakdown in this bulletin.
