NHS hospital and community staff (HCHS)

  • Last modified date:
    1 June 2007

This area covers the major parts of the NHS workforce outside general practice. The latest summary figures and definitions of hospital and community staffing are provided by the the Information Centre for Health and Social Care in their publication "Staff in the NHS 2005".

Separate sources give more detailed figures on medical and dental workforce including hospital consultants and other grades, public health doctors and dental consultants and non-medical staff (nurses, midwives, therapists and scientists). These groups relate to the main statistics, which are collected via annual workforce census. Information is also presented on vacancy surveys.

All NHS doctors at a glance
As just a small part of the Department's Statistics Division, we only collect statistics about doctors and dentists in the Hospital and Community Health Services (HCHS). All of the detailed statistics on these pages relate to HCHS doctors and HCHS dentists. Other colleagues collect statistics for GPs. However, we sometimes receive requests about all NHS doctors, which includes HCHS doctors, HCHS dentists and GPs. The table below provides a summary headcount of all NHS doctors in England from 1975 to 2001. If you require anything more detailed, please contact us and we will try to help or put you in touch with the right person as appropriate.
