Choosing Health sets out action to ensure children and young people are supported to choose a healthy lifestyle. An integrated approach will see the benefits of good nutrition taught in the classroom, whilst healthier choices are available at lunch and breaktimes. Outside of school, there will be restrictions on the promotion of less healthy foods to children.
As well as promoting better nutrition through education, Choosing Health sets out an intention to market health. The first government-licensed logo, 5 A DAY is already used to promote healthy eating by showing which products count towards your five daily portions of fruit and vegetables. Research shows that awareness of the 5 A DAY message is growing.
Personal support is also promised for those people who make the decision to live healthier lives. NHS-accredited health trainers will be able to provide advice and support on how to eat more healthily. In 2007 a new telephone, online and digital television service will provide confidential advice on improving lifestyles, and support for those who wish to take responsibility for their own health.
Ambitions for Health sets out our formal response to the recommendations contained in It's Our Health.
