We have reached an agreement with industry to include health and unit information on most alcohol labels by the end of 2008, as well as reworded advice for women on alcohol and pregnancy.
We are consulting on whether the agreement should become mandatory.
You should regularly see advice similar to the example below on bottle labels:
Most people are aware of units as a measure of alcohol consumption (86%) but only 13% keep a check on the number of units they drink. Labels with unit information will help people keep an eye on how much they are drinking, allowing them to monitor their alcohol intake more easily.
Labelling information is being supported by a major Government alcohol campaign to raise awareness of units – Know Your Limits (see link below)
Drinkaware Trust was set up in 2006 as a unique world-first partnership between Government and the alcohol industry to promote sensible drinking.
The trust is funded by industry but is wholly independent. Voluntary donations come from across industry, including producers, pub companies and retailers. The trust promotes sensible drinking through campaigns and educational resources, as well as grants for local alcohol awareness initiatives.
The Department of Health has commissioned an independent review to better understand the link between alcohol related harm and how alcohol is promoted and priced by the industry. We have published a summary of the international evidence (LINK). The review will report in summer 2008 and will help the Government consider the need for further legislation if necessary.
