Although evidence continues to show that cannabis use is steadily falling across all age ranges, there is real public concern about the potential mental health effects of cannabis use and, in particular, the use and availability of increased strengths of the drug, commonly known as skunk.

The Government is tackling cannabis use through a package of measures as part of its Drug Strategy, including prevention, education, enforcement and treatment.   Our multi-media 'FRANK' campaign will continue to ensure young people are well aware of the risks.

The Department of Health is developing an online self-help facility to support cannabis users to reduce or stop their use.  The Department will be exploring how we can routinely signpost people into treatment through all healthcare professionals and public information, such as NHS Direct. We have also made available a mental health support pack for mental health practitioners.  It emphasises the significant risks cannabis consumption can have for those with mental health problems, and gives advice on managing this.

Significant Government investment has delivered record numbers in drug treatment and additional treatment places ensuring that any cannabis user requiring treatment will be able to access it.
