The Department of Health has published Local Delivery Plans which require the NHS to return local data on BMI levels.

One Local Delivery Plan line is obesity status among people aged 16 and over, as recorded in GP records. This measure is intended to act as a proxy for prevalence of obesity in the adult population and galvanise action to tackle overweight and obesity. Each Primary Care Trust (PCT) is required to submit quarterly data on the number of patients who had there BMI measured over the last 15 months, number of patients with a BMI equal to or greater than 30 in the last 15 months and number of patients on the register aged 16 and over. The data collected for quarter 4 2006/07 and before is based on a different GP population aged 15 to 75.  This data is also sent to Regional Directors of Public Health, Strategic Health Authorities, and the regional Obesity Co-ordinators.
