Food in Schools programme
The Food in Schools (FiS) programme is a joint venture between the Department of Health and the Department for Education and Skills (DfES). A whole range of nutrition-related activities and projects are being developed as part of the programme, to complement and add value to existing healthier food initiatives in schools.

The aim of the proposed voluntary targets is to improve the nutritional composition of these products and so support Government work to review nutritional standards for school meals.

The Healthy Schools Programme aims to help all schools create an environment where young people and staff can reach their full potential. It provides an opportunity to review existing health promoting practice against set criteria, to identify areas for further development and set targets relevant to each individual school.
Healthy Start: a new Welfare Food Scheme
Healthy Start will provide vouchers that can be exchanged for fresh fruit and vegetables as well as milk and infant formula. It will also ensure that pregnant women and families participating in the scheme have the opportunity to access good quality information and advice about healthy family diet and about infant feeding as well as broader health issues.

Infant feeding
The Government is fully committed to the promotion of breastfeeding, which is accepted as the best form of nutrition for infants to ensure a good start in life. Breastmilk provides all the nutrients a baby needs. Exclusive breastfeeding is recommended for the first six months of an infant's life.

Local Exercise Action Pilots (LEAPs) are locally run programmes to test and evaluate new ways of encouraging people to take up more physical activity.
Obesity Training Directory
This directory has been produced to give PCTs an idea of the different types of training courses available for obesity prevention and management across the country. It is intended to act as a guide for PCTs who need or wish to take a more strategic approach by commissioning obesity training from a wider pool beyond the training programmes that they can access locally. PCTs may wish to use this resource as a starting point and seek further guidance from local training officers and experts in obesity management, such as physical activity specialists and registered dietitians.
Thousands of children across England have been issued with pedometers as action to tackle childhood obesity took another step forward today with the official launch of the Schools on the Move pilot scheme.
Sustainable travel demonstration towns
In autumn 2004 the travel behaviour of more than 12,000 people across the 3 towns was surveyed, and more than 1,200 people were interviewed indepth. The results will form the baseline data for monitoring the project and also provided a fascinating insight into peoples regular travel behaviour. Smaller interim surveys will be carried out to chart progress against milestones, and another large survey is planned in 2009 to measure the success of each project.
Wired for Health
The Wired for Health website is a joint initiative between the Department of Health and Department for Education and Skills. It aims to provide accurate and engaging information on health for teachers and learners.
