Independent sector places for the termination of pregnancy

This page outlines the approved independent sector places for the termination of pregnancy under the Abortion Act 1967, as amended. The Secretary of State for Health has the power to approve independent sector places for the purpose of treatment for the termination of pregnancy.

Places wishing to provide these services need to contact the Care Quality Commission. Once the place is registered under the Care Standards Act 2000, the Secretary of State will then consider the approval of clinics or hospitals for the purposes of section 1(3) of the Abortion Act 1967, if proprietors undertake to comply with the Abortion Act and the Care Standards Act including the National Minimum Standards and Regulations for Independent Health Care and the Procedures For The Approval Of Independent Sector Places For The Termination of Pregnancy.

Failure to comply with or maintain the standards required by the Secretary of State, may lead to withdrawal of approval.
