Cancer plan pilot projects

A range of smoking cessation pilot projects have been run in the following areas:

  • Prisons
  • The Army
  • Factories
  • Working men's clubs
  • Small and medium enterprises
  • Health authorities
  • British Thoracic Society hospital survey
  • Bingo halls

Available evaluation reports and good practice guides can be accessed below. Remaining reports and guidance will be added when available.

Smoking cessation services have an important role in meeting the NHS Cancer Plan target of reducing smoking rates among manual groups from 32% in 1998 to 26% in 2010.

It is hoped that the 'Good Practice Guides' developed from the pilot projects will help smoking cessation services meet the Priorities and Planning Framework 2003-2006 target of 800,000 smokers successfully quitting at the four-week stage by 2006.

The evaluation of each pilot project has provided valuable information to help guide future practice in reducing smoking among the identified groups.

The Good Practice Guides have been designed for smoking cessation services as well as policy makers interested in developing similar smoking cessation projects in their organisations.
