2008/09 NHS R&D transitional funding allocations

The total sum available for Transitional Funding is related to the pace of implementing Best Research for Best Health research strategy. The 2008/09 allocations are not directly related to a baseline figure from 2007/08, but represent 42.1% of pre-Best Research for Best Health allocations in cash terms. This is within the anticipated range of 35% to 45% as notified in November 2007. 2008/09 is the final year of Transitional R and D Funding, and a brief report on use of this money will be required in July 2009.

For the future, we are awarding an increasing amount of NHS research funding through the new NIHR schemes. We are also continuing to implement a transparent, sustainable, activity-based funding system for NHS R and D support funding, via the Comprehensive Local Research Networks, aimed at ensuring that funding follows R and D activity.
