An advisory group to the NHS Central Research and Development Committee (CRDC) identified 20 priorities for Research and Development (R&D) in the area of the evaluation of methods to promote the implementation of research findings.
First round of funding
- Analysis of research-based evidence by policy makers
- Assessing the impact of national guidance to promote clinical effectiveness
- Effect on evidence based practice of general health policy measures
- Effectiveness and cost effectiveness of teaching critical appraisal skills to clinicians, patients/users, purchasers and providers to promote uptake of research findings
- Effectiveness and cost effectiveness of reminder and decision support systems to implement research findings
- Effectiveness and cost of audit and feedback to promote implementation of research findings
- Examining the influence of source and presentation of evidence on its uptake by health care professionals and others
- Exploring and evaluating roles for health service users in research implementation
- Exploring the role of commissioning in securing change in clinical practice
- Exploring why some clinicians but not others change their practice in response to research findings
- Evaluating the role of the media in promoting uptake of research findings
- Evaluating the impact of clinical practice guidelines in disciplines other than medicine
- Evaluation of Local research implementation and development projects (such as GRiPP)
- Evaluation of interventions directed at clinical and medical directors and directors of nursing in trusts to promote evidence-based care
- Identifying professional, managerial, organisational and commercial factors associated with securing change in clinical practice, with a particular focus on trusts and primary care providers
- Identifying the principal sources of information on health care effectiveness used by clinicians
- Impact of professional and managerial change agents (including educational outreach visits and local opinion leaders) in implementing research findings
- Investigating educational strategies for continuing professional development to promote the implementation of research findings
- Investigating the role of undergraduate (pre-qualification) training in promoting the uptake of research findings
- Management of uncertainty and communication of risk by clinicians
Second round of funding
Applications were invited for:
- Rigorous evaluations of the effectiveness of interventions to improve the uptake of research findings in practice.
and suggested interventions were:
- interventions targeting professionals (educational approaches, local opinion leaders, audit and feedback, reminders and decision support, marketing approaches and multifaceted interventions);
- interventions targeting patients;
- organisational interventions (eg. contracting processes).
