The Technology Strategy Board and the Department of Health have announced the launch of a new pilot Small Business Research Initiative competition in Health Care Associated Infections (HCAI). The HCAI competition is managed by the NIHR Invention for Innovation (i4i) Programme. Projects will be in two phases: Phase 1 is intended to show the technical feasibility of the proposed concept, and will be for a maximum of £100,000 per project. Phase 2 is intended to develop and evaluate prototypes or demonstration units from the more promising technologies, and will be typically in the range £250,000 to £750,000 per project.
Phase 1 of the HCAI competition opened today and closes on 24 November 2008.
The report summarises the findings of sixteen research studies funded by the Department’s Policy Research Programme as part of the Older People’s Use of Services research initiative to assess the key aspects of the National Service Framework for Older People. The report was launched at the UK Age Research Funders Forum event, Shaping the Future, Showcasing UK Age Research, held at the Royal College of Physicians on 2 October.
The Chief Scientific Officer (CSO) in collaboration with the National Institute for Health Reasearch is launching a major new fellowship scheme to boost research capacity for Healthcare Scientists. These fellowships will offer a stepping stone for individuals to bridge clinical/service careers and research, enabling them to undertake research that will have direct patient benefit.
Eight leading biomedical research funding organisations including the Department of Health have approved funding to further develop the UK PubMed Central website over the next three years.
The consultation by NHS Connecting for Health (NHS CFH) gives healthcare professionals, patients and the public the opportunity to input into the way the NHS uses their health information for for research purposes as well as managing and planning care. The consultation will close on 12 December 2008.
A further two new NIHR Collaborations for Health Research and Care (CLAHRCs) in Nottinghamshire and Cambridgeshire & Peterborough have been announced. They will receive a total of £18 million to conduct research and improve care in major conditions, and will complement the seven Collaborations announced in May 2008.
The Department of Health welcomes the publication of the Procedure for the Investigation of Allegations of Misconduct in Research by the UK Research Integrity Office. The Procedure contains principles to inform the conduct of investigations of alleged misconduct and to ensure that they are carried out with the highest standards of integrity, accuracy and fairness. The standards are applicable to all fields of research.
The implementation plans for the major components for the NIHR have been revised. Each implementation plan sets out the aim of the proposal, who will be involved, how it will be funded, and the timetable for implementation.
The Medical Schools Council today launched a recruitment portal for clinical academic jobs in UK medical schools. The website will act as a vital career resource for the current and future academic medical workforce. Job seekers will be able to search, free of charge, for job vacancies and research opportunities by school, by specialty, by region and by job title.
The NIHR Invention for Innovation (i4i) Programme has been launched to accelerate the translation of healthcare ideas into new and innovative products for the NHS.
Two major infection research consortia have been established in London and Oxford to conduct collaborative research into nationally important areas including healthcare-associated infections and antibiotic resistance. This is the first round of funding awarded under a UK Clinical Research Collaboration (UKCRC) joint initiative, potentially involving seven funding organisations including the National Institute for Health Research.
