Housing and Support Options

Valuing People has an objective to enable people with learning disabilities and their families to have greater choice and control over where, and how, they live. This should be achieved by increasing the range and choice of housing open to people with learning disabilities in order to enable them to live as idependently as possible. This guidance has been produced jointly by the Department of Health and the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister to help local councils with their planning. Each Learning Disdability Partnership Board is required to develop a housing strategy for people with learning disabilities by winter 2002/03 and Annex A of the guide provides a check list of key tasks to help achieve this. Additional support in the development of housing strategies will be provided by the Valuing People Support Team. The guide is intended to help local planning it does not say how things must be done within each local authority.
