During May 2007 the Department of Health, in partnership with the Welsh Assembly Government and the Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE), is publishing five sets of training materials to support the implementation of the Mental Capacity Act 2005. The five sets (a core set, a mental health set, a residential accommodation set, a community care and primary care set and an acute hospitals set) can be downloaded here.
The Department of Health through the Care Services Improvement Partnership (CSIP) has appointed a National Advocacy Qualification Development Manager who has begun work with the Sector Skills Council, the advocacy sector and relevant others to define the learning outcomes for a qualification. It is hoped that the qualification will become available during 2008.
In the meantime, Action for Advocacy, a leading organisation in the advocacy field, has developed a four day IMCA training course, which is currently being delivered to all those recruited to the IMCA role. Over 200 IMCAs have been trained and training will continue throughout 2007. IMCA organisations should book places directly with Action for Advocacy.
