On 13 July 2006, the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) announced the chosen themes for Round Nine of the Beacon Council Scheme.

The beacon scheme will provide an excellent vehicle and resources through which we can facilitate the sharing of knowledge, expertise and best practice with the ultimate aim of bringing all local authorities up to the dignity in care standards set out in the Older People's NSF and the subsequent 'Next Steps' report.

It will be a high profile award for councils that excel and it demonstrates our commitment in the longer term to driving up standards of dignity in care.

We see dignity in care as being a key priority for health and social care services.  Last week, we launched the Health and Social Care Awards for 2006.   We are committed to improving standards of Dignity in Care but also recognise that there are people in the service who already go that extra mile to deliver dignified services. We want to say thank you to those people and share their best practice widely.  We are very pleased that the 2006 Health and Social Care Awards will include a new Queen Mother's Award for Dignity in Care for Older People.
