This report examines the competing sources of data and methodologies, and judges them against a set of criteria relating to fitness for purpose for constructing output indices with and without the quality adjustments studied by University of York Centre for Health Economics/National Institute for Economic and Social Research.
The report was requested by a working group set up to review data sources and methodologies used to calculate the output of the NHS, with particular reference to hospital output. The working group was comprised of representatives from ONS, DH, HSCIC, the health departments of the devolved administrations and the University of York.
