Latest list of participating dental practices in contract pilot scheme published

The latest list of dental practices participating in the dental contract pilot scheme, indicating their primary care trust and pilot type is available.

This was published under the 2010 to 2015 Conservative and Liberal Democrat coalition government

Seventy pilot sites are now live around England, each trialling a different model. The list contains live pilot practices and pilot types information. The pilot types are:

  • type 1 - guaranteed remuneration for guaranteed NHS commitment
  • type 2 - weighted capitation payments applied within tolerance of contract value with capitation payment covering all care
  • type 3 - weighted capitation model applied within tolerance of contract value with capitation payment covering only routine care and remaining contract value attributed to complex care guaranteed

The new national dental contract will be based on a payment model based on capitation will mean that dentists are paid on a ‘per patient’ not ‘per treatment’ basis, allowing them to deliver the care the patient needs. It will be structured to reward dentists for the continuity and quality of care provided to patients.

Patients attending pilot practices should notice very little difference in their treatment. Initial appointments will be slightly longer than usual because it will include the new standardised oral health assessment.
