Details of the public health grants to local authorities for 2016 to 2017 are available.

The public health grants provided local authorities with £8.25 billion between 2013 and 2016 to spend on public health services for their local populations. Broken down per year this is:

  • 2015 to 2016: £2.80 billion (this includes baseline adjustments of £7.7 million)
  • 2014 to 2015: £2.79 billion
  • 2013 to 2014: £2.66 billion

The local authority circular sets out the conditions for using the money.

Upper tier and unitary local authorities have a duty to take appropriate steps to improve the health of their population, funded through a guaranteed grant. Local authorities will take the lead for improving the health of their local population and reducing health inequalities.

  1. The local authority circular LAC(DH)(2014)2 has been added. It sets out the public health grant determination and conditions for 2015 to 2016, these cover children 0-5 services due to be transferred to local authorities in October 2015. In 2015 to 2016 the allocations increased to £2.80 billion as a result of locally agreed baseline adjustments of £ 7.7 million submitted to the Department of Health.

  2. The local authority circular LAC(DH)(2013)3 has been amended to show revised public health grant allocations payment dates for 2014 to 2015.

It sets out the public health grant determination and conditions for 2014 to 2015, the list of the categories of public health spend which local authorities will need to report to, and the expected quarterly dates that the public health grant will be paid to local authorities in the year 2014 to 2015.

  4. The table of ring-fenced public health grants, the exposition book public health allocations 2013-14 and exposition book 2014-15 have been updated to include the revised grants to three local authorities: Bath and North East Somerset, Cheshire East, and Cheshire West and Chester.
